Dune Planting on Virginia Key

International Day of Climate Action!
Oct 24 2009

10/24 is International Day of Climate Action.
Everything we do is aimed at reversing Climate Change, but since 350.org and 1Sky are publicizing it at the Copenhagen Summit in December 2009 we'll support their efforts!

It seems like a great excuse to do what we do, and the Dunes need TLC ASAP!

Starts at 9am, ends around noon.
BBQ is optional.
Tell the Gate Attendant you are an Urban Paradise Volunteer (free admission).
We're working at the east end of the Park. Follow the main access road past the parking lots. It turns into a dirt road. Keep driving until you see people with shovels.

To RSVP, send an e-mail to:
sam@urban-paradise.org

Background:
Historic Virginia Key Beach has been the site of a series of Habitat Restoration projects by members of the Nature & Environment Committee. I am a member of this committee, and have led groups of students removing invasives from restoration areas.

Near the end of September, I encountered and photographed a Sandhill Crane in an area where we have been doing Stewardship since January. This is a VERY encouraging sign!
See: http://www.transitmiami.com/2009/10/02/new-visitor-on-virginia-key/

Sand Dunes have been re-created to replace those taken away during the past. They must be planted with Natives quickly to prevent Invasive Exotic Plants from taking hold.

Thanks,

-Sam
