BISCAYNE WATERSHED INITIATIVE

Biscayne Bay belongs to each of us. Its potential is vast, but it has serious problems.

What do you want your Bay to look like? Do you want it to be aquatic playground for local families, or a dumping ground neglected or abused by the people around it?

Biscayne Bay has been degraded by human development for more than a century. Many of the things that made it Paradise were bulldozed, buried and paved, but we don’t have live with all the mistakes of past generations.

Mangroves calm and filter the water, and provide the breeding grounds that fish and birds must have. Butterfly-friendly plants provide the specific foods these delicate organisms must have. Invasive plants that have no natural predators and are removed, allowing native plants to provide the food and shelter our animals need to survive.

Should our Bay have crystal-clear water and clean air? Do you want abundant fish, birds, manatees and dolphins? That is what we want, too.

The Urban Paradise Guild is working to replace what has been lost. Our volunteers, land-owners and partners around the Bay all do their parts.

The rewards are

amazing.

We’ll enjoy better fishing, fewer waves and better kayaking. The cleaner waters will allow more life to live – and allow us to see it.
